Cepheids — Henrietta Leavitt — Astronomy
Cepheids are stars whose brightness pulses predictably. Henrietta Leavitt was an American astronomer who discovered the relationship between a Cepheid’s luminosity and its period, a breakthrough that allowed astronomers to calculate distances across galaxies and ultimately measure the scale of the universe. Her work became the foundation of the cosmic distance ladder and made possible the discovery of our expanding universe. She died before the full cosmological impact of her discovery was recognized and before she could be formally nominated for a Nobel Prize. The Vendela white rose basket reflects her legacy: a perfection created by nature combined in structure that plays on space.
